Because of this gradual engagement, spiral bevel sets generally run smoother and can handle higher loads in many applications, but they also generate axial thrust and are more sensitive to mounting distance, backlash, and contact pattern during assembly. (If the axes are offset rather than intersecting, that’s a hypoid design.)
