What is Spiral Bevel Gears?

Spiral bevel gears have curved, oblique teeth arranged in a spiral. This design ensures more gradual and quieter engagement than straight-tooth gears.

What are the key features and advantages of Spiral Bevel Gears?

They offer smooth, quiet operation at high speeds and can handle heavy loads. Their spiral design also allows for a larger contact area between teeth.

What are some common uses and applications for Spiral Bevel Gears?

They are used in high-speed, high-torque applications like automotive differentials, machine tools, and helicopter transmissions to change the axis of rotation.

How to Customize Bevel Gear Ratios?

Bevel gears transfer motion between intersecting shafts—most commonly at 90°. By selecting an appropriate gear ratio, you can tune output speed and torque for your application. Our series offers standard ratios of 1:1 (miter), 1:1.5, 1:2, 1:3, and 1:4.
Gears within the same series are fully compatible and may be paired interchangeably to achieve the required ratio. For best results, always select gears with the same module, pressure angle, tooth form, and mounting distance, and use matched pairs from the same series.

Whats is spiral Bevel Gears

Spiral bevel gears are conical gears with curved, spiral teeth that mesh gradually, delivering higher contact ratios, smoother motion, and lower noise than straight bevel gears—especially at high speeds. They transmit power between intersecting shafts, typically at 90°, and support higher torque due to improved load sharing along the tooth. Common ratios range from 1:1 (miter) to about 5:1. For accuracy and durability, they’re usually case-hardened, ground, and supplied as matched pairs with controlled mounting distance and backlash. Typical applications include automotive differentials, aerospace and marine drives, industrial gearboxes, and precision machinery where efficiency, quietness, and reliability are critical.

Straight vs. Spiral Bevel Gears

Quick comparison for selection and application guidance.

Dimension Straight Bevel Spiral Bevel
Tooth form Straight teeth Curved (spiral) teeth
Shaft angle Typically 90° (customizable) Typically 90° (customizable)
Noise / Vibration Higher, especially at high speed Lower; smoother operation
Load capacity & life Moderate Higher
Machining difficulty / Cost Lower; simpler to manufacture Higher; more expensive
Alignment & assembly More sensitive to coaxiality/center distance More forgiving assembly tolerances
Typical applications Agricultural machinery, tools, low-to-medium speed gearboxes Automotive differentials, high-speed machinery

Custom Bevel Gears

  • Wenlio Gear’s bevel and miter gears turn power between shafts that meet at 90°.

  • Ratios: Miter gears are 1:1. Bevel gears range from 1.5:1 to 6:1.

  • Tooth design: Usually 20° pressure angle. A long/short addendum is used to avoid undercut on small tooth counts.

  • Matching rules (Miters): They only work together when tooth count, pitch, and pressure angle are the same. You can use more than two in one system (e.g., a differential).

  • Matching rules (Bevels): Sold as matched gear–pinion pairs. Do not mix different pitch, pressure angle, or ratio. When one is worn, replace the whole pair, especially for low ratios.
